Garage Door Maintenance Tips: Tips for Maintaining Your Garage Door
Maintaining your garage door is one of the best ways to keep your garage door operating like new.
Maintenance for your garage door is relatively easy. Here are a few maintenance tips to keep your garage door looking -and operating- like new for years to come.
Check and Clean Tracks
The tracks and rollers keep your garage door rolling along smoothly. If the tracks are damaged or dirty, the garage door won’t roll smoothly, and it can even become imbalanced. Check the tracks for any minor damage and pound out small dents with a rubber hammer. Dust and dirt to build up in the garage door tracks. Make sure the tracks are clear of all dirt and debris as any small bit of debris can cause a garage door to become off centered.
Lubrication
After everything is cleaned, it’s a good idea to apply lubrication to the metal components. Lubricate the rollers with regular engine oil. Hinges, pulleys, and latches should also be lubricated. Without proper lubrication, a garage door will become noisy and won’t operate properly.
Check Weather Strips
Weather stripping provides an extra layer of insulation, protecting the inside of the garage –and your home- from the unpredictable Gainesville weather. Properly installed weather stripping can prevent moisture from coming into your garage and causing your garage door to rust or rot. To clean weather stripping - warm soapy water will do the trick. If the weather stripping is cracked or in bad shape it should be replaced.
Door Sensors
Garage door sensors are a part of your garage door’s safety system. Sometimes they get knocked out of line and will need to be realigned. Generally, when the sensors are not aligned correctly, the lights will flash to indicate this. Once they are re-positioned the lights should stop blinking, and a solid light will appear.
Safety Checks
A safety check should be done at least once a month. A safety check involves making sure the garage door sensors are all working, and the automatic reversing mechanism is working properly as well. To test the automatic reversing mechanism, simply put a roll of paper towels underneath the path of the garage door, and attempt to close the door. If everything is working properly, your garage door should stop and reverse itself automatically.
Annual Professional Inspection
It’s a good idea to have your garage door inspected annually by a professional. A qualified service technician can make sure that your garage door is working properly, and can help to prolong the life of your garage door.
